Typical Fire Suppression System Diagram

Every commercial kitchen fire suppression system uses the same core parts working together - detection, activation, fuel shutoff, and discharge. The numbered diagram below shows where each component lives, and the legend explains what each one does.

What Each Component Does

Detection Line Conduit

Covers and protects pull cables throughout the entire system.

Fire Suppressant Tanks

Pressurized with fire suppressant chemicals specific to the type of cooking and equipment being used.

Pull Station Handle

Located by an exit for safety. When the handle is pulled out fully (14 in.), cables activate the fire control system while simultaneously shutting off the supply of fuel (typically gas) to the cooking equipment (7).

CO2 Tank

Activated by pulling the cable handle. When punctured, the CO2 gas opens valves on the suppressant tanks and pressurizes the system, blowing off the nozzle caps (13).

Manual Gas Shutoff Valve

Manually turns off gas to the supply line for service or installation of appliances. Also a backup should the automatic system fail to close off the fuel supply, though that is unlikely if the system is serviced properly.

Automatic Gas Shutoff Valve

Triggered by cable when the fusible links (14) break or when the handle (3) is pulled.

Gas Supply Line

Provides fuel to cooking appliances.

Duct Nozzle

Prevents fire from igniting any residual cooking fuel inside the exhaust ducts. Fire that has progressed inside the exhaust ducts is probably the most dangerous and difficult to control.

Plenum Nozzle

Prevents fire from igniting any residual cooking fuel inside or behind the baffle filters.

Cable

Cables are still preferred over digital or keypad activation. Simple and failsafe by design.

Ansul Pipes

Pipe which becomes pressurized with fire suppressant when the system is activated.

Spray Nozzle

Spray nozzles are mounted over each cooking surface and aimed for maximum efficiency and coverage.

Nozzle Caps

All nozzles should be covered with NFPA rated nozzle caps to prevent airborne grease and other contaminants clogging their openings. More in our nozzle caps article.

Fusible Links

Temperature rated and color-coded links placed over the cooktop areas. In a fire they melt or break, releasing cable tension and automatically activating the entire system. More in our fusible links article.

Portable Fire Extinguisher

A K-Class extinguisher for use after the pull station (3) is activated. Remember P.A.S.S. - Pull the pin, Aim at the base of the fire, Squeeze the handle, Sweep the hose side to side. More in our K-Class article.
