NFPA Standards We Work To
We believe your understanding of how your system works matters as much as the system working during a fire. Our technicians walk you through every step of the service and explain what the code requires and why. All inspections are performed in accordance with NFPA 10, NFPA 96, and NFPA 17A.
NFPA 10 - Portable Fire Extinguishers
- 7.3.2 Annual external maintenance - every extinguisher gets an annual external visual examination for physical damage, corrosion, or nozzle blockage; operating instructions legible and facing forward; HMIS information present; and a check of whether a 6-year internal examination or hydrostatic test is due
- 7.3.2.5 Corrective action - when an external examination reveals a deficiency, immediate corrective action shall be taken
- Table 8.3.1 - hydrostatic test intervals by extinguisher type (full table below)
NFPA 17A - Wet Chemical Systems
- 7.3.3 Maintenance - at least semiannually, and after any system activation, maintenance shall be conducted per the manufacturer’s design, installation, and maintenance manual
- 7.3.4 Fusible links - fixed temperature-sensing elements of the fusible metal alloy type shall be replaced at least semiannually from the date of installation, and destroyed when removed
- 7.3.4.1 Tagging - the year of manufacture and date of installation of the sensing elements shall be marked on the system inspection tag and signed by the installer
- 7.5.1 Hydrostatic testing - wet chemical containers, auxiliary pressure containers, and hose assemblies tested at intervals not to exceed 12 years
NFPA 96 - Ventilation and Fire Protection of Commercial Cooking
- 10.4.1 Fuel and electric power shutoff - upon activation of any fire extinguishing system for a cooking operation, all sources of fuel and electric power that produce heat to all equipment protected by that system shall automatically shut off
- Semi-annual inspection of the kitchen fire suppression system by a licensed company
- The standard behind every Boss Fire suppression inspection
NFPA 10 Table 8.3.1 - Hydrostatic Test Intervals for Extinguishers
| Extinguisher Type | Test Interval (Years) |
|---|---|
| Stored-pressure water, water mist, loaded stream, and/or antifreeze | 5 |
| Wetting agents | 5 |
| AFFF (aqueous film-forming foam) | 5 |
| FFFP (film-forming fluoroprotein foam) | 5 |
| Dry chemical with stainless steel shell | 5 |
| Carbon dioxide | 5 |
| Wet chemical | 5 |
| Dry chemical, stored pressure, with mild steel shells, brazed brass shells, or aluminum shells | 12 |
| Dry chemical, cartridge or cylinder operated, with mild steel shell | 12 |
| Halogenated agents | 12 |
| Dry powder, stored-pressure, cartridge or cylinder operated, with mild steel shells | 12 |
UL 300 is the fire test standard every modern commercial kitchen suppression system must meet - it is why wet chemical systems replaced the old dry chemical setups over cooking appliances. Every system we install, service, and inspect is verified against it. See how the systems compare in our comparison guide.
